The problem
A full-service law firm is the hardest thing in professional services to sell, because full-service means nothing to the person reading it. Corporate, litigation, intellectual property, real estate and banking, from a firm with two lawyers on the page, had to read as range rather than as overreach.
What I built
A WordPress site in which the promise comes before the practice areas. Three reasons to choose the firm, then five practice areas, then the lawyers themselves with what each one actually handles, and a blog with the structure already in place for the firm to write into.
The result
The homepage answers why this firm before it answers what this firm does, which is the order a client decides in. Each practice area has its own card, each lawyer has their own named specialism, and the firm can publish without anyone touching the build.
The client
Lamide Kadir & Co. is a full-service Nigerian law firm, barristers and solicitors, working with corporations, financial institutions and individuals in Nigeria and beyond. Its practice runs across corporate and commercial law, dispute resolution and litigation, intellectual property, real estate and property law, and banking and finance.
It is led by its principal partner, Olamide Kadir, whose work is in corporate law, secured credit and commercial law, with Uche Nwachukwu as senior associate on litigation and dispute resolution.
A firm this size competes against names with four floors and a hundred lawyers. The website is where that gap either shows or does not.
The problem
- 01
Full-service is a phrase, not a proposition
Every firm claims it, so it persuades nobody and it differentiates nothing. Worse, from a small practice it can read as a firm that has not decided what it is. The site had to turn breadth into a reason to choose rather than a reason to doubt.
- 02
Competing against firms ten times the size
The same corporate client is looking at practices with a hundred lawyers. A small firm cannot win that comparison on scale, so it has to win it on the thing scale costs you: the partner actually working on your matter rather than passing it down.
- 03
Five practice areas, two lawyers on the page
Handled carelessly, that arithmetic undermines the firm. Handled properly, it is the offer: the people named on the site are the people who do the work, which is precisely what a client at a larger firm never gets.
- 04
Nobody was going to maintain a static site
A law firm writes when a judgment lands or a regulation changes, and it writes that week or not at all. Anything that required a developer for a blog post would have meant a blog with three posts on it forever.
What I did
- 01
Positioning
Your legal partner, proven and professional. Partner is the operative word and it is doing real work: it frames the small firm's structural advantage, which is that you are dealing with a principal rather than with whoever was free.
- 02
Why before what
Three propositions sit directly beneath the hero, before a single practice area is named. Client focused, meaning tailored solutions with a personal and responsive touch. Industry-spanning expertise. Global perspective, local insight. A visitor decides why this firm before they check whether it covers their matter, so the page is ordered that way.
- 03
Practice areas as cards
Five areas, each in its own card with its own short description, rather than one list. Corporate and commercial, dispute resolution and litigation, intellectual property, real estate and property, banking and finance. Scannable in a few seconds, which is all the attention this section gets.
- 04
Putting the lawyers forward
The team section is not a formality here, it is the argument. Each lawyer is named with the work they actually handle, corporate and secured credit for the principal partner, litigation and dispute resolution for the senior associate, so a client can see exactly who their matter would sit with.
- 05
Design direction
A dark, photographic hero with a serif headline and one warm yellow for every action, so the site reads as considered rather than as assembled. Enough restraint that a corporate client takes it seriously, enough warmth that an individual is not intimidated by it.
- 06
Build
WordPress on a block-based theme, so the firm can publish a post or amend a practice area without a developer and without a page builder's lock-in. The structure is fixed by the build; the content is theirs.
- 07
A blog with somewhere to go
The blog is part of the architecture rather than an afterthought. A firm covering five practice areas has five subjects it can write about, and in a market where every competitor's site says the same five adjectives, writing is the cheapest way left to be found.
Key design decisions
- Partner in the headline, because it names the one thing a small firm offers that a large one cannot
- Three reasons to choose the firm placed above the practice areas, matching the order a client decides in
- Five practice areas as separate cards rather than a list, so the section is scannable in seconds
- Each lawyer named with their own specialism, turning a two-person team from a weakness into the offer
- A block-based WordPress build, so the firm can publish without a developer
- One warm accent for every action, against a dark photographic hero
- The blog built into the architecture rather than added later
