The problem

A good product with passionate customers and growing demand, sold entirely by hand. Every order ran through WhatsApp, which does not scale and leaves no record.

What I built

I mapped the journey from discovery to delivery and found three distinct buyers: consumers shopping for the home, hospitality businesses ordering branded serveware in bulk, and gift buyers after something personalised. The store architecture had to serve all three, so it launched across five categories with multi-currency checkout.

The result

Live in three weeks. Manual WhatsApp orders fell by more than 60 percent as online became the primary sales channel, across five product categories and four supported currencies.

The client

CC Serving Trays is a Lagos artisan brand making premium personalised wooden serveware: engraved boards and platters, bowls, plates, trays and spoons, for restaurants, hotels, catering businesses and home buyers who want something distinctive on the table.

Personalisation is the differentiator. Hospitality brands come to have their logo, name or a message engraved into the wood, which turns everyday serveware into part of the guest experience. Their client list covers some of the most recognisable hospitality names in Lagos.

The business was growing on word of mouth and social media. Every sale still ran through WhatsApp.

The problem

  1. 01

    No online ordering

Every enquiry arrived by WhatsApp or Instagram message. The founder personally quoted prices, confirmed engraving details, chased payment and coordinated delivery. That does not scale, and it does not stop.

  2. 02

    No digital catalogue

Buyers had no way to see the range, understand pricing or explore customisation without starting a conversation first. Plenty never started it.

  3. 03

    No payment infrastructure

With no gateway, collecting money was slow and inconsistent, and international buyers had no straightforward way to pay at all.

  4. 04

    No presence beyond social media

No search footprint, no credibility anchor for corporate buyers, and nowhere to show testimonials or the brands they already work with.

What I did

  1. 01

    Discovery and planning

I mapped the journey from discovery to delivery and found three distinct buyers: individuals buying for the home, restaurants and hospitality businesses ordering branded serveware in bulk, and gift buyers after something personalised. The store had to serve all three without confusing any of them.

  2. 02

    Platform selection

WordPress with WooCommerce. For a product-led business with custom engraving and several categories it gave the right balance of flexibility, control and cost, plus a backend the team could run themselves: adding products, updating stock and processing orders without a developer on call.

  3. 03

    Design

The brief was warmth, craftsmanship and trust. Wooden serveware is a tactile, emotional purchase, and the site had to carry the quality and the care that goes into each piece.

  4. 04

    WooCommerce setup

Five categories with proper product pages, engraving options captured at the point of purchase so the back and forth disappears, local Nigerian payment methods alongside international cards, order management that tracks every engraving specification and fulfilment status, accounts and wishlists for returning customers, and a checkout trimmed to reduce drop-off.

  5. 05

    WhatsApp, kept on purpose

Their customers were used to ordering on WhatsApp, so the chat button stayed. New visitors still get direct access to a person, and the store handles the straightforward orders on its own.

  6. 06

    Mobile first

Most of the audience finds them on Instagram and arrives on a phone, so the store was built and tested mobile first, through to checkout.

  7. 07

    On-page SEO foundation

Optimised product titles and meta descriptions, a clean URL structure, alt text on every product image, and a Google Business Profile to catch the local search intent from Lagos restaurant buyers.

Key design decisions

  • Warm, photography-led layouts with the product front and centre
  • Category navigation kept plain: boards, bowls, plates, trays, spoons
  • A dedicated personalisation section explaining how engraving works and what is possible
  • Trust signals throughout: customer testimonials, client logos, and a WhatsApp button for buyers who want to speak to someone first
  • Multi-currency support in naira, dollars, pounds and euro, for local and international buyers

What the client said

Before the website, I was handling every single order on WhatsApp myself. It was exhausting. Now customers can browse, customise, and pay all in one place. Nnamdi built exactly what we needed and made the whole process smooth from start to finish.

Questions about work like this

All questions

Can a website replace taking orders on WhatsApp?

It takes the straightforward ones off your hands, which is where the hours go. That store kept a WhatsApp button for buyers who want to speak to someone first, and manual orders still fell by more than half.

Can customers customise a product before paying?

Yes. Engraving details, names, logos or a message are captured at the point of purchase, so an order arrives with its specification already attached to it.

Can I take payments from outside Nigeria?

Yes. Local Nigerian methods and international cards run side by side, and prices can display in more than one currency.

Do I need to understand WooCommerce to run the store?

No. Adding products, updating stock and processing orders happen on an ordinary admin screen, and you get a walkthrough at launch.
